Simply Crochet is thrilled to be celebrating another year hosting Granny Square Day, a huge Instagram event where the crochet community from around the world come together to make crochet granny squares and share them by tagging @simplycrochetmag and using the hashtag #GrannySquareDay2026.

Granny Square Day is an international online celebration on Instagram, which takes place every year on the 15 August. Keep an eye on this page for the latest updates on Granny Square Day, and take a look at our fab granny square patterns and tutorials to help you take part in the special day!

All you have to do is hook, snap and share! When you share your squares, be sure to tag @simplycrochetmag so your work can become part of the big granny square blanket on our page!

How to get involved in Granny Square Day 2025

The event was originally created in 2014 by the US crochet whizz Susan Regalia, who realised that Instagram’s iconic grid format could be used to replicate the patchwork arrangement of the classic granny square blanket online.

Others quickly caught onto the idea and so Granny Square Day way born – a chance for a worldwide community to come together and celebrate what they love.

“A blanket is a gift of comfort and love,” says Susan. “When any of us view or contribute some of these granny squares, it’s as though we join in a giant world hug with each other!”

Instagram’s workings have since changed, and Granny Square Day has changed with it. While the new aspect ratio and algorithm no longer support this virtual blanket organically, we’d still love to see your squares, and we’ll still be putting them together to make a virtual granny square on the @simplycrochetmag Instagram account! Whether you’re new to crochet, or are a seasoned pro, it couldn’t be easier to get involved. Here’s how to get involved in Granny Square Day:

1. Take a photo of a granny square (a 4-round traditional granny works best but feel free to be as creative as you want). If you’ve made more than one square, photograph these one by one. Try and snap them against a plain background if possible.

2. Make sure the entire square can be seen in the post. Although it may be cut off on the grid, we can crop your squares to size to assemble a collage of our favourites.

3. Tag us @simplycrochetmag so we can see your make!
