Free panda toy knitting pattern

Everyone remembers their first cuddly toy, and this panda bear is the perfect christening or first birthday gift. Soft and squashy, Percy won’t spend much time on the toy shelf – in fact, he’s sure to become a firm friend!

“This loveable panda bear is knitted in stocking stitch, the simplest of techniques, so it won’t take you too long to finish!” says designer Ann Franklin, who created Percy for Knit Today issue 99. He’d be a good first toy project if you’re a beginner knitter looking to try something new.

It’s important to keep a firm tension when making toys, so knit and stuff a swatch before you start and consider going down a needle size if you find that the stuffing pokes through the holes in the fabric. Remember to shred the stuffing before you use it so you get a nice smooth finish, and use tweezers to stuff any harder-to-reach bits, such as Percy’s paws.

You will need:

• Stylecraft, Special DK (100% acrylic, 100g/295m), 60g of White (shade 1001) and 50g of Black (shade 1002)
• A pair of 3¼mm knitting needles
• 150g of toy stuffing

Ann Franklin has many years of knitting experience, having been taught to knit, crochet and sew as a very young child by her mother, who was hugely skilled in all three. She combines knitting and designing with her full time job as a HLTA in a local primary school . She is also proud to be a ‘Knockerette’ – she knits and crochets for Knitted Knockers UK, a fantastic charity which provides free breast prostheses for women who have undergone a mastectomy or lumpectomy.
